Hw 5

Remy,

I appreciate your thoughts and feelings about my blog post. You really seem to understand the point I am trying to come across.

It is very helpful that you included your own thoughts about my post, and this helps me think beyond them. Also, I guess the way I write may seem a bit confusing to others like you, so I will try to fix that for next time.

I was trying to focus on more about how the digital/electronic media has changed our society and if we can try to challenge ourselves into living without it for a day. I disagree, even though you are not always forced to use such materials, at times you come across situations where you are not able to avoid the electronic media. For example if your job is in near Times Square, you have to walk through the streets filled with digital/electronic media to get to work. Or you may blind fold yourself when walking through Times Square but that would not be such a great idea.

I think you tend to talk more about how we use digital electronic media for pleasure, where as I talk about it based on survival and looking at alternatives.

Both of us seem to ask questions that cannot be answered until they are tested out; for example let’s try to live without the digital/electronic media that surrounds us now days. How will it change the way we think right now?

Andrew,

I appreciate your kind words about my blog post. I think you really enjoyed learning about my thoughts on this topic.

It helps me a lot when you included your own thoughts feelings, and questions about what you read. This helps me out because I like to build off of other peoples questions since it helps me dig deeper into the topic.

I tried to base my thoughts on my own experiences and how to me others seem to mix into this topic of digital/electronic media. After reading your questions I start to think more about where I actually stand in this situation. I haven’t deeply thought about this, but now I am starting to. To be honest I don’t know where I stand exactly, I just seem to be somewhere. I need to start creating an answer to where I stand based on my thoughts and feelings. Right now I hear many things from different people and it interferes with my thoughts because I do not have a right answer.

It looks like I base my thoughts on all of us as a whole like how our community responds to all this. You want to learn more about me as an individual in this situation.

Both of us seem to question ourselves on how if all this is supposed to be a good or a bad thing. When will we be able to get a straight answer?

Family Member:

Me: "How do you think social networking websites have changed the way we interact with eachother?"

Brother: "I think that social networking websites have changed the way we interact with eachother in many ways. We are able to reach out to the people we need to talk to even if they are not online, they simply are always "available" for us. They are always ready to recieve our messages (offline messages). We have become so used to using these social networking websites that we prefer to talk online rather than talking on the phone and using up all our minutes. It seems like we learn more about eachother from peoples wallposts, or statuses than we would in a normal school day. I think that without these websites a part of us would be hidden from others. We seem to automatically look up people on facebook to see what they are up to rather then calling them up and saying wat up? wacha doin?

Passerbyers:

Me: "How many hours do you think you spend in a normal day using digital/electronic media?"

Lady: "I would say 12 hours since its my job."

Lady 2: "I use it all day."

Me: "Do you think adults should spend more time in the digital/electronic world when compared to younger kids?"

Lady: "I would say we should all use it at most 3 hours a week, once a day for 10 minutes. Time is valueble, using these things helps us connect with people overseas which is a good excuse to use these products. Talking on the phone is more time effecient rather than texting, since it is too time consuming; thats what phones are for."

Lady with kid: "Yeah, why not. Adults should spend more time using the digital electronic products. I use facebook for 30 minutes each evening. I will buy electronics for my child because thats what everyone else does. If he does not have a cell phone then I will be in trouble."

Me: "If I say you look like a person who is captured in the digital world would you be insulted or complimented?"

Man: "Half way in between."

Man 2: "I wouldn't be insulted or complimented, but it does give me a strong reaction."

Lady (aged): "I would be complimented because you think that I am younger than I am right now. I have a cellphone."

Man 3: "I would be insulted, It would be like saying I am from an unreal world."

Best Friend:

Me: "If I say you look like a person who is captured in the digital world, would you be insulted or complimented?"

Jamila:
“I wouldn’t feel insulted because I do not understand what being captured in the digital world means. I would feel indifferent about it and ignore it.”

Rowa:
“I would not like that because a person who uses electronics a lot are not healthy since they are sitting down and not moving. They are not smart enough because they are wasting valuable time when they should be studying or reading a book. Most of the people that sit using electronics are usually on the computer wasting their time. They are playing games or on Facebook or Myspace, while they should be writing that research paper. So no, I would not like it.

Me: “Should adults be spending more time using electronics or should teens be spending more time using them?”

Rowa:
Adults, because kids do not need to use them daily like adults do. For example adults use electronics for their jobs and stuff like that. If kids use it a lot it can have a bad effect on them because they are wasting their time using such things. This will lead to having lack of information. Nowadays kids know more about electronics than they do know about how to do their homework.

Hw 6: Video Prjoect

When I am looking at the video I just shot, I feel weird looking at my self using digital/electronic devices. But in a way it seems normal since I have become so used to using these devices. I am able to see what I look like using these materials. I look like I am lost in a world surrounded by these things. When I am listening to my mp3 player and playing on the PSP, I have my full attention on what is in front of me and what I am hearing. I completley forget about the outside world and pay close attention to the screen and what I am listening to, thats it nothing else. I feel like I am looking at a different person when watching this video of myself.

Hmmm, well I guess now a days we have to spend some time day to day doing these things. My sister is almost 7 years old and she is always asking me if she can get on the computer after me. It's what our life depends on now. Without it our life would be very different in many ways. In the future I think my kids would be using these things since everyday our technology is getting better and modarnized. If we did not have such devices surrounding us, we would be living a pretty tough life. I mean look at this, I am doing my homework by using the computer, if I wasn't able to have access to a computer this would have affected my grades in school, and later on lead me into a bad future. For many of us we are based on using the digital electronic media, without it many adults would lose their jobs and students would not be recieving good grades in school. These are just important things that make up our life, other things such as keeping in contact with our family and friends that are overseas would not be possible at all. It is pretty amazing how all this has changed the way we live. We wouldn't be able to do much without any of these materials.

The contrast between whats going on in the DRDs and how I look using them is different depending on who the person is using them. If I was someone else looking at my video then I wouldn't have known what game I was playing or what song I was listening to. Since I am the one using these devices, I am the only person that is able to know. When I look at this video, I am not able to look at what is going on the screen, or hear the music that I am listening to. I am just looking at my self using DRDs. The two ways you look at it is very different, since I am the one using the PSP and MP3 player in the video I am the only one that knows what is really going on. Other people watching this video will just see me using these devices. They wouldn't be able to see the pictures on the screen or hear my playlist.

Hw 4 - Triangular Comments 1

Andrew:

Hey, before reading your post I had no idea what you were like, your likes dislikes, etc… After reading it I was able to learn a lot about you as an individual, and your thoughts on the digital/electronic world as well. I like how you compare yourself to others; I am able to figure out how you are different and similar to others in many ways.

Like many you feel like Myspace, Facebook and Twitter are not interesting at all. They only take up your time but will never help you in the long run. To you your I pod is your life, and without it you do not seem to function properly. Even though some things seem useless to you and you feel like many people abuse the use of social networking sites, it seems to help you keep up with long ago friends and acquaintances.

Even though you are not addicted to the use of these social networking sites, you are absolutely addicted to music just like many others. You cannot be recognized without Ipod, it is a part of your life and you carried it everywhere possible; until you lost it L. I think that you are the person the people at Apple are looking for. You love their products and have ideas for new products as well. They would absolutely love you, and thank you for all your help.

Before posting anything for others to see, you should try to proof read all the text you have written. To develop your thoughts you should answer questions about how the digital/electronic media has changed you as your own person. How do you think it affects others around the world? How would you be different if you had no access to any of it? Would you be able to survive? Why do you think digital/electronic media was created and do you think it should have been created? This will definitely help you deepen all your ideas on this topic.

Reading your thoughts creates a question in my mind, how does my life relate or differentiate from yours? We both like to use the phone and Aim when needed, but do not abuse these materials. Social networking sites are okay to spend our time on for a limited amount of time to catch up with other people, but we do not like to update our lives and let others know what we are up to daily. Even though I like music at times, I am definitely not addicted to it. I think that music for me is a tool to concentrate or relax, but at many times it is unnecessary.

Thanks, I was able to learn much about you as an individual in a small amount of time, I would like to read more about your thoughts in the future.

Remy:

Remy,

Your first post is pretty amazing. You go back into history as well as staying on the topic of our modern world today. You relate many of your things to random acts (“Even if what we have is just a funny video of a cat, there are still thousands of people out there that will be happy because you shared it”), but they seem to help me understand your thoughts a lot.

You seem to want the digital/electronic lives of ours to have been provided for those who lived before us. You feel that when you are online, people base you on your thoughts and personality, other than your appearance. Without the use of the internet, you would not be recognized for your uniqueness.

Your thoughts on the digital electronic media are the same as those who love this aspect of today’s life. Without this same thing in common you wouldn’t be able to come across new people online, in which you are interested to learn about. Without the use of the internet, you would not be the same person as you are now.

Even thought your grammar is perfect, you do not talk much about how you would be a different person if you had no access to the digital/electronic products surrounding you these days. Would you be able to live without such use? You brush up on some of the history (Romeo and Juliet), but it would be much more interesting if you expand your thoughts on how the digital/electronic media would have changed history as a whole? Also, you mainly talk about the internet, what about other digital/electronic materials?

By exploring your thoughts and feelings on this topic, I am able to see how we are similar and different at some points. We both like the use of the internet, but do not abuse it. You like to meet new people on the internet, where as I only talk to people that I previously know.

It was nice looking at your thoughts on this topic; I am interested in hearing more soon.

Homework 3

It actually surprises me when I look at the total number of hours people have their eyes glued to screens like this. This suggests the topic of the digital and electronic environment we live in. Even thinking about living a day without the use of these electronics, many people would think that it would be impossible for them to do. They don't seem to look back at time and see how years ago many others survived without the use of all the digital and electronic media.

What seems interesting to me is that none of these people take the risk of finding out what would happen if they went a day without digital/electronic media. They just assume that they would not be able to live without it, but they never get to find the answer since they are never willing to try it. What’s good about this is that we are able to connect our lives with others and are updated with news within seconds of when it has occurred. The news that we see, hear and experience in our world today keeps us close together and on the same page of current events.

For many, people are able to learn many things about others by looking at the info posted on their facebook profiles, than they would if they were to spend some time with them face to face. Without this entire media, news would not be able to travel fast enough; it would take days or weeks, which would be too late. What’s bad about all this is that this entire media is eating up the lives we live. Instead of going out to play sports or spending quality time with our families, many would rather be texting on their cell phones, surfing the web or playing video games. I feel like this digital and electronic media sensation is taking away the time we would usually use to do other things. I think that if we had a limited use of these materials we would learn how to survive without such items.

People seem to care more about what is going on with other people and tend to know more about their friends instead of their families. The reason for all this is that when not engaging in using the digital and electronic devices, people tend to be doing the things that they need to live like eating and sleeping, then they resume their use of electronics. This is very interesting because in the days we live in people cannot seem to cope with their lives without the usage of such materials. Obviously these people are lost in a world of unlimited usage of such devices, which is important but only in a limited amount of usage. I guess it would be really hard to live without such materials, but if we learn to limit ourselves then we will all know how to control ourselves.

When looking back at how individuals lived their lives decades and centuries ago, the digital media has changed a lot about how we live. When looking at the old days, young women would be with their mothers doing the house chores, helping with food and taking care of the family’s needs; while the young men would be with their fathers in the outside world. If we are to picture how the old times would change if everyone started to use these digital electronics, there would be no history left for us. Looking at the environment we live in now, nobody would be able to survive a day without any digital/electronic media usage, unless if someone is willing to take the risk, the question is who will be the first to do so?
